10/17 The hand limit helps players anticipate whether their opponents will follow when exploring. This is a good part of the game, when you want to (and can) anticipate other’s actions.
10/11 Hand limit of 3
- When you explore and are at the hand limit, can you pay to draw a card and then discard a card? Initially, I said Yes, although I don’t think anyone actually did so. Final rule: you cannot draw if you are at your hand limit.
10/10 Getting 9 VP from fleet is too much. We can limit this by decreasing the max hand size to three cards. We discussed having different hand size limits based on player count, but a simple flat limit of 3 works best.
10/3 Before the game started, I took Manny aside and asked him to hoard as many cards as he could, even at the cost of winning. I explained that we’re looking to see if there should be a hand limit, and what that limit should be. He managed to get 6 cards in his hand, but it didn’t seem to negatively affect the rest of the game. However, the other players didn’t try for a sneak attack victory, because it was clear Manny had the largest fleet.
After watching Manny win with a huge hand of cards, the first two players chose “Explore” as their first action, and everyone (who could afford it) followed, so the deck ran out pretty quickly.
9/30 Is there a hand limit? [No]. Should there be? [5 cards]
